I just found out today that you can get five free GitHub private repositories if you are a student. You’ll just have to add your university email address to your GitHub account, confirm it, fill out a short form and you’re done! (probably lower educational institutions email addresses are fine too)
You should shortly receive an email telling that your free account has been turned to an educational account and that you’ve been given five free private repositories. The private repositories are going to stay free for two years.
